Ro2 Art Serves Up "Spoons" by Erik Tosten

If you think about it, spoons are very multifunctional. They are likely one of the most basic tools in your kitchen, yet have so many unexplored uses and designs. You can eat with them, put them on display, use them in your kitchen, give them as a gift, or even play the card game "Spoons" with them.  As you can see, their functionality is not just limited to an eating utensil.

You are probably wondering where I am going with this post by now... But, recently I came across these beautiful hand-crafted wooden spoons at Ro2 Art Gallery from the talented artist and woodworker, Erik Tosten. They serve (no pun intended) as functional pieces of art that you can display in your kitchen!

One of the reasons why these spoons caught my attention right away is the story behind their creation. Tosten believes in giving each piece its own personality that you can only get from one-of-a-kind handmade objects, not mass-produced ones. Calling woodworking a "rebellion against the mass-produced disposable object makers of the world," his goal in the woodshop is to slow down and take the time to make high quality, handmade products. As a result, he produces spoons that are stronger, funkier, and only get better with age.

Although the pictures below don't do them justice, they are truly beautiful! They make great one-of-a-kind gifts as well as a unique addition to your kitchen.

Master Glass Opening Ceremony at Ro2 Art Gallery!

Calling all art-lovers!

THIS Saturday, June 16th marks the beginning of Part II: Master Glass Invitational, an exhibition in celebration of the works of Dale Chihuly showcasing 31 nationally known glass artists and emerging talents from Texas- and we couldn’t be happier that it kicks off at our very own Ro2 Art Gallery, right here in West Village! The gallery will be hosting the Opening Reception THIS Saturday, June 16th from 6:00-9:00 PM, where anyone can mosey on in and visit with the artists, enjoy a glass of wine, and admire some amazing glass work.

In case you haven’t heard of Master Glass 2012, it is a three-part celebration of glass in its many forms by artists from the Dallas area. The 31 artists were all spotlighted at 12 different Dallas galleries during Part I. Now, in Part II, the artists have selected their favorite piece to be displayed at Ro2 Art Gallery. From etched glass and stained glass, to kiln-fired glass and beyond, expect to see unique glass work in all different forms, shapes, and sizes. I even took a sneak peak at the gallery earlier today and let me tell you- prepare to be amazed!

The exhibition is brought together at the height of the glass movement as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the American Glass Studio Movement that was launched in 1962 in Toledo, Ohio. Previously, glass had not been widely recognized as an actual art form. However, throughout the country people are now beginning to recognize it as a medium, and now Dallas is a part of this national conversation, highlighting local artists from the area. Although the Invitational lasts until July 15th, the real fun will be THIS Saturday night for the Opening Reception at Ro2 Art Gallery and celebrate it all coming together. See you there!

Opening of Benjamin Terry: Not Really There

I love seeing exceptional art. I love it even more when the artist is a local.

You won't want to miss the work of Benjamin Terry, a product of The University of North Texas. The opening goes from 7-10 pm on Saturday, January 28 at Ro2 Art Gallery Uptown.

Don't take my word for it, though.

A word from the artist:

"My current work combines representational images and the chaos of ephemeral composition. I play with various thoughts and emotions that pass through my mind at any given moment. Working with memory, fantasy, dreams and time, I use multiple selves to create a narrative sequence that reflect on ideas of internal conflict, self doubt and emotional trauma.

'Not Really There' - 48"x52" Graphite and Enamel on Wood Panel

My painted figures escape the confines of naturalism. Like a memory or dream, parts of the narrative become blurred or fragmented--and the original thought is always transformed. Their evolutions, whether through multiplicity, incompleteness or obliteration, imply that my subjects are odd fragments of a half-forgotten memory."
