Mattel carefully chose designer, Natalia Romano, a Los Angeles native to design a gown in celebration for the 50th anniversary of Barbie. Her winning design is a one-of-a-kind gown that was reminiscent of Barbie’s first 1950’s bathing suit.
Romano is a self-taught couturier and a rising young designer in the West Coast fashion scene. At age fourteen, she attended the summer fashion program at OTIS School of Art and Design in Los Angeles where she was one of the youngest students to enroll. While in high school, Natalia was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). As the youngest student in her class again, Natalia stood out as a creative and energetic young talent. She was a student in the prestigious advance study program, when Mattel approached her.
