We thought this day would never come.

We couldn't be more giddy to introduce Union Bear, a Spillers Group concept. The old Social House space next to Taco Diner was completely transformed into a nanobrewery. In case you're wondering what the heck that is, it essentially means a neighborhood brewery. Matt Spillers explains that they make "enough beer just to supply our neighborhood here in Uptown." Hmm. Sounds exclusive - we likey.

But don't just come for the beer. The the menu, created by John Kleifgen, is below. Until further notice, they are only open for dinner.

What's on my 'to-order' list?

Opening of Benjamin Terry: Not Really There

I love seeing exceptional art. I love it even more when the artist is a local.

You won't want to miss the work of Benjamin Terry, a product of The University of North Texas. The opening goes from 7-10 pm on Saturday, January 28 at Ro2 Art Gallery Uptown.

Don't take my word for it, though.

A word from the artist:

"My current work combines representational images and the chaos of ephemeral composition. I play with various thoughts and emotions that pass through my mind at any given moment. Working with memory, fantasy, dreams and time, I use multiple selves to create a narrative sequence that reflect on ideas of internal conflict, self doubt and emotional trauma.

My painted figures escape the confines of naturalism. Like a memory or dream, parts of the narrative become blurred or fragmented--and the original thought is always transformed. Fresh New Look For L.bartlett

BEFORE

Saying L.bartlett had a facelift just seems so dramatic... I'd like to think this little lady just had a couple shots of botox for some good 'ole maintenance and upkeep... think Michelle Pfieffer - not Joan Rivers (yikes!).

AFTER

As I walked into the store, I instantly realized for the first time how big of a space it actually is! The teal and white color scheme remains, however there are new fixtures and a much more sensible layout. The wall that divided the old Glass Slipper space from the original L.bartlett store is no longer there. Nothing breaks your line of sight, and you can conveniently see all of the clothing.

That brings me to my next point. Owner, Laura Bush (no, not the former First Lady), wanted to make sure the new white, wooden fixtures were strategically placed for effective merchandising. I definitely noticed a clearer shopping path as I combed the color-coordianted racks. Want something blue to wear to SMU tailgate? There's a rack for that. Need that perfect nude dress that goes with everything? There's a rack for that. Or what about that LBD you need for girl's night out? Yep. There's a rack for that too.

As I made my way towards the back of the store, I noticed the check-out desk had been moved and updated with new glass jewelry cabinets on either side for optimal viewing pleasure. Not one bauble went unnoticed as I perused the the selection.

My last stop was the far left wall where the amazing sale rack currently resides. (L.bartlett is known for it's ridiculous sales... think half off on lines like Karina Grimaldi and Madison Marcus!)

A little touch up was just what the doctor ordered. If you haven't been to see her new look yet, get over here!

It's that time of year again!

The Intown Chabad and West Village have organized this fabulous event sponsored by Action Metals, The Texas Jewish Post and Starbucks, for the fifth year in a row. Every year the lighting gets bigger and better, and this year is no exception.

The fifth annual celebration of the festival of lights will feature live music by Jewish blues singer Saul Kaye, free coffee from Starbucks, donuts and latkes, giveaways and more!

While the menorah-lighting event will take place on Thursday, December 22 from 7-10 pm, the menorah will be lit every night during the eight-day observance (sunset December 20 through sunset December 28).

Where to Start:

Spray in Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray into your dry hair. This product is great for texture for women of all hair types, and for those that would prefer to go a couple days without a wash; this sodium chloride and paraben-free product also works as a dry shampoo!

The Real Work:

After spraying, comb your hair back, for the sleek look at the front. Tie into a loose pony tail with an elastic band. For the hair that doesn’t feel like there is bundles to work with, don’t be afraid to have some fun and tease around the nape and collarbone area. It’ll give the appearance that you had tons of hair to work with. Others with lots of hair, keeping it matte and sleek works!
Take the pony tail and tuck under to hide the elastic band. Crisscross two large bobby pins across the elastic band; it should be pinned to the nape of the neck. Shake your head side to side to reassure the hold.
If you would like to add shine, at a distance, lightly spray Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray. (For blow drying, Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray can also be used to speed up the blow drying process. A little Royal Blowout goes a long way though, so always try to spray from the ends up to avoid an oily scalp.)

On Thursday, September 29 the Côtes du Coeur Wine Society and Young at Heart groups hosted the 2011-2012 kick off event at West Village, a Mobile Pizza Smackdown featuring Chefs Paolo Cavalli of Cavalli Pizzeria, Salvatore Gisellu of Urban Crust and Jay Jerrier of Il Cane Rosso. Guests sampled each of the chefs' delicious specialties, and then put their vote in for the winner. Urban Crust chef Salvatore Gisellu was selected as Dallas' reigning wood-burning pizza chef! Dallas Pedicabs Now in Uptown

Dallas Pedicabs will be hitting the streets of Uptown this weekend. Stop by the Launch Party at the Katy Trail Ice House tonight from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. to have a brew with the team behind bringing the new, sustainable form of transportation to Dallas and enjoy your first pedicab ride.

How can people hail the pedicabs?
Call us (214-725-7375), flag us down or plan it out ahead of time and email us.

What is the charge to ride a pedicab?
Currently it is tip based, so it is discretionary to the patron. Soon we will have a suggested rates chart though, and I'd imagine you will see $5-$25 rides.

Are there specific routes that the pedicabs will be traveling?
The pedicabs will mostly be running in Uptown from Central Expressway to Cedar Springs (East to West) and from Blackburn Street to Pearl Street (North to South). They will also travel to American Airlines Center, if you need transportation to or from a game or event, West End, and the Design District. We will also be operating the pedicabs to and from the State Fair.

Baboush Market & Bar Now Open

Owners Sam Benoikken and Yaser Khalaf of Medina Oven & Bar recently opened their new concept restaurant, Baboush, in West Village. Located on CityPlace West Boulevard between Cork Wines and The Fish Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Baboush specializes in savory Moroccan and Lebanese cuisine. We met with the owner, Sam Benoikken, to get the scoop on their new restaurant in West Village.

What is the concept behind Baboush?
We named the restaurant after the leather Baboush slippers found in the small, traditional markets in the heart of Marrakech, Morocco. This market also served as the inspiration for the concept behind Baboush, it influenced everything from the street vendor style small plates to the culture-rich ambiance and lavish décor.

What type of cuisine do you offer at Baboush?
Our menu features old-world, authentic Moroccan and Lebanese dishes inspired by the street vendors in the markets in Marrakech and traditional family recipes passed down to us through several generations. We call it the "skinny jeans cuisine," because the fresh, healthy ingredients used in Lebanese cuisine come together with the dry, traditional spices of Morocco to create the exotic, distinctive flavor profile of our dishes.

How did you develop the menu?
Baboush's menu was developed based on my research in a famous square called La Place in Marrakech, Morocco where food is cooked and served on small plates in the streets. Yaser and I also incorporated several traditional family recipes into the menu. The dishes, executed by Mediterranean and Moroccan trained executive chef Ben Sharrod, of Dallas' Foundation Room, and assistant chef Nabil Nakawak, are served Moroccan Mezze style (small plates) to encourage an environment of sharing among family and friends similar to the market environment.

Describe the design elements that make up the exotic ambiance at Baboush.
The design elements at Baboush are inspired by the small market in Marrakech and the colorful, hand-crafted Baboush slippers sold there. We worked to create an authentic, culture-rich ambiance with every detail by incorporating intricate Moorish tile work, exotic stained glass lanterns, sumptuous textiles, hand-painted wood tables, and elaborately woven leather stools all imported directly from Morocco. Even the music at Baboush is meant to transport our guests to the east.

What are a few of your favorite dishes on the menu?
Each item on the menu has a very distinctive flavor profile. We serve the dishes Moroccan Mezze style (small plates) to encourage our guests to try a little of everything. One of my favorite dishes is the Platter to share with our spreads (Moroccan Sweet Tomato, Hummus, and Babaganoush), mixed market olives, and pita bread. A few other favorites are The Moutabal du Jardin salad, Tangiers Salad, Falafel, and Pomegranate Beef Skewers.

How was the specialty cocktail menu developed, and what are a few of your favorite "Sexy Drinks" as the menu describes them?
We we were developing the specialty cocktail menu I couldn't help but thing about the women in my life including my mother and sisters. I really tried to develop the flavor combinations based on what they like and don't like. We wanted to balance the Sexy Drinks so they are fresh, interesting, and not too sweet. We also worked to incorporate the traditional spices and exotic ingredients used in the kitchen such as green tea, mint, orange blossom water, apricots, pomegranate, tamarind, cinnamon, lemon, and orange. A few of my favorite drinks are the Casablanca Mint Tea Martini, Tamarind Martini, and Pine-infused Cardamom Martini.

Ro2 Art Re-Orient Opening Reception

This Saturday, September 24 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. stop by the Opening Reception for Ro2 Art's new gallery show, Re-Orient by Linda Dee Guy. For Re-Orient, Linda Gee Guy will present works as a human scale assemblage, layered from archival inkjet prints, drawings, photographs and screenprints.

I am a collagist and lately like to think of myself as a “design anthropologist”, if there were such a profession. The conceptual direction that I take in Re-Orient, is to combine an inclusive collection of various historical patterns with self-originated elements. Hopefully, the result crosses over into a contemporary perspective embracing both the past and the present, erasing some boundaries assigned between high and low art.

Linda Guy has been an Associate Professor of art at Texas Christian University since 1976. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and an MFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art. She teaches Lithography, Screenprinting, Digital Printmaking and Mixed Media. Linda Dee Guy's work has been included in over 75 group shows, a dozen solo exhibitions, and four invitational international exhibitions in Nagaoka, Japan, and Lima, Peru.
